Synopsis

Although Turkic–Hungarian relations have often been discussed in the context of Ottoman rule in Central Europe and the wars of the 16th and 17th centuries, the historical ties between the two peoples extend much further back in time. Prior to their settlement in the Carpathian Basin, the Hungarians established contacts with the Huns, Onogurs, Bulgars, and Khazars, while their encounters with the Avars took place within the Carpathian Basin itself. Their relations with the Pechenegs, Uzes, and Cumans, in turn, played a significant role in the history of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary. At different periods and to varying degrees, these peoples contributed to Hungarian ethnogenesis. Coexistence, political and military alliances, conflicts, migrations, and processes of assimilation left enduring traces on the Hungarian language, material culture, social structure, and historical memory. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the studies collected in this volume address some of the most prominent questions and research themes concerning early Turkic–Hungarian relations and provide a concise synthesis of the principal scholarly findings to date.
